It is fast and accurate, though lacks the same level of prediction as these big two. Other notables include the addition of swipe typing like Swiftkey and Swipe.

That said it is a great addition and brings fast access to customisable quick settings and notifications, though at present it lacks the deep level control of Android or the widget support recently unveiled in iOS 8. This is a somewhat shameless rip-off of the notification bar first seen in Android, then also copied in iOS. The last of the three big changes is the new ‘Action Center’ (pictured below). A ‘show more tiles’ option enables fitting three rows of tiles where you’d normally get two and background wallpapers can be added which look classy poking through elements of transparency – even if you can’t see much of the wallpaper in general. Speech recognition is fast and accurate with integration to core functionality like mapping, email, calls and Bing search and it is now being launched outside the US.Īnother biggie is Live Tiles. It is named after the AI character from the company’s Halo series and works remarkably well for a version 1.0 product. The biggest news is ‘Cortana’, Microsoft’s answer to Siri and Google Voice Search.

Windows Phone 8.1 - Now A Platform To Compete With Android And iOSįorbes has written extensively about Windows 8.1 already and I have also discussed it in my review of the superb Nokia Lumia 630, but we’ll touch on the main aspects again here. Storage and connectivity is excellent with 32GB of inbuilt memory (though no expandable microSD slot) and 4G, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, a 3.5mm headphone jack (which at least doesn’t appear under threat as on Android and iOS) and the ubiquitous micro USB charger. We talk more about this in the dedicated Camera section. The 930 has a 20 megapixel lens backed up by Carl Zeiss optics, optical image stabilization (OIS) and a dual LED flash. The camera meanwhile is a big attraction – at least on paper. On the plus side the 800 chip remains one of the fastest available and Nokia has combined it with a healthy 2GB of RAM. The latest Android phones have moved to Snapdragon 801 and this offers some big battery saving improvements. Where this decision could come back to haunt Nokia is the choice of a 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 quad core chipset. By comparison similarly specified Android handsets have fitted batteries closer to 3000mAh which puts a lot of pressure on Windows Phone 8.1 to perform efficiently. This is larger than any previous sub 5-inch Windows Phone handset, but again there is a bigger screen and more powerful chipset in the 930 so it should be.

Flagship Android phones may have crept above 5-inches now and even – in the case of the LG G3 – above a Full HD native resolution, but both still remain the sweet spot for high end smartphones being on the limits of one handed use, razor sharp to read and a fair trade off for battery consumption.ĭespite this one area of potential concern is the Lumia’s 2420mAh battery.

The headline feature of the phone is its 5-inch 1920 x 1080p display. Much like Apple’s iPhones, Windows Phones have traditionally avoided a straight specification fight with Android handsets, but with the 930 that is about to change. Specifications – The Most Powerful Windows Phone Handset Ever Made In short: from a design perspective the Lumia 930 is up there with the very best handsets on the market giving even the HTC One M8 a run for its money.

Then again it remains portable and cuts a significant 18g (0.64 oz) from its predecessor, the Lumia 920. At 137 x 71 x 9.8mm (5.39 x 2.80 x 0.39 inches) and 167g (5.89 oz) the 930 is among the heavier phones with 5-inch displays and weighs 22g (0.77 oz) more than the Samsung Galaxy S5. We’ll discuss the screen more in the ‘Specifications’ and ‘Performance’ sections, but from a design perspective it is the cherry on top continuing the subtle, curved edges seen on previous premium Lumias for a high class edge-to-edge display. A refreshing change from the pinhole approach that is being increasingly adopted. One small shortcut is the plastic nano sim card tray, but it isn't a major fault and can be opened with a fingernail. Nokia may have been better advised not to place all these buttons on the same side, but they are well spaced for muscle memory and using aluminium gives the phone a great sense of solidity. Like the iPhone 4S, the 930 has an aluminium band around the edges which houses external antennas and volume, power/wake/lock and dedicated camera buttons.
